Bean - Contender - Phaseolus vulgaris
Tender Annual Bush. This highly productive, stringless, snap bush bean is great fresh from the garden, frozen, or canned. A very early variety, Contender beans grow on medium-sized plants with 6"-8" pods. The beans are medium-green in color and round-oval in shape. The plant is tolerant of hot weather and mildew.
Soil & Water: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering which can promote disease.
Planting & Growing: Start indoors in short-season climates, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65F, preferably after the last frost. Make small, successive plantings every 10 days for a continuous harvest.
Harvesting & Storage: Bush beans will produce all of their fruit over a few weeks' time. For best flavor, harvest the pods before they reach _" in diameter regardless of their length.
Did You Know? Snap beans are ready to pick when the pod breaks cleanly in half.
