Vigna unguiculata Warm season legume cover crop. Vigorous, heat-loving legume. Great choice for California growers. Fixes Nitrogen (150-250 lb/acre), produces good organic matter, grows to 40 in 80-90 days, and if it is not plowed down, yields large, edible peas in 90-120 days. Planted early, it aggressively chokes out summer weeds. Like Cowpeas, Black Eyes have some nematocidal effect. Plant in rows 18"-24 apart, at 40-50 lb/acre or 2-3 lb/1000 sq ft.
