Studies at top universities and garden application results since 1996 have shown that plants grow better and more rapidly over reflective mulch than ones without any mulch. Brite-N'up is effective and environmentally friendly. Silver mulches reflect sunlight up into the undersides of the canopy thereby increasing photosynthesis, leading to rapid growth, increased numbers of fruits or vegetables, along with enhanced color and uniformity. Mulches in general hold soil temperatures at consistent levels. The reflective properties of the silver mulch produces an increased light intensity that tends to repel whiteflies, aphids and other bottom leaf dwelling insects. Apparently, insects are confused by the amount of sunlight being reflected up by silver mulch, so they are less likely to land on these plants. Other benefits of silver mulch include weed control and decreased water usage. It also provides a physical barrier against ground pests. Soil temperature is maintained at a consistent level, the soil is protected from rain and irrigation compactness and it helps prevent rainfall and irrigation water from splashing soil borne pathogens onto the plants. Engineered to be applied silver side up, it should last up to a year depending on environmental conditions.
