Common food plants available today represent only 3% of those present in 1900. Since the time of Columbus, 75% of native crop varieties in the Western Hemisphere have disappeared. One primary reason is that modern agribusiness hybridizes for commercial advantage. Cosmetic appearance and marketing convenience have replaced the evolutionary and traditional importance placed upon genetic diversity, viability, nutrition and flavor. Stewardship of the earth must include preservation of our botanical heritage. This is why we offer a selection of heirloom seeds (crops grown by Europeans, Canadians and Americans in the last 300 years), traditional seeds (crops grown by indigenous people), nutritionally rich varieties, drought tolerant plants, and culinary herbs.
