Strawberries

We offer varieties of bare-root spring bearers and ever bearer strawberries. Bare-root strawberries are available in 1 lb (approx 25-50 plants) bundles for the home gardener, or in bulk boxes of 800-1200 plants for the commercial grower. All are available to begin shipping in January. Buying bare-root is an exceptional bargain because the plants cost less, are less expensive to ship, and they arrive at the best time to plant - during dormancy.
Strawberries generally grow 6"-8" tall & 12" across, are shallow-rooted, and benefit from pine needle or straw mulch. Prefer a soil rich in all the basic nutrients with a pH of 6-6.5. Susceptible to root rot & must be planted in well-drained soil, with crown set at soil level. Yield under the best of conditions is about one basket per plant per season. Bird netting (p. 115, Main Catalog) is recommended if you do not want to lose too many berries to our winged friends. Mulching film (p. 54, Main Catalog) is a great idea as it greatly reduces the need for weeding.
