Salvia hispanica Mexican Chia. Annual. Native to South America. Makes succulent, bright-green, bushy plants up to 4 feet tall. The seed is made into a stimulating beverage, high in soluble fiber and oil. Regulates sugar metabolism.
- Plant prefers full sun and mesic soils of moderate fertility. Overmoist and fertile soils can cause much bushiness and little seed production.
- Sow seed just beneath surface, tamp securely, keep moist until germ, which is rapid, then thin or transplant to 2 foot apart.
- 90 days to flowers, 120 days to seeds
Certified Organic, 300 seeds/pkt.
Planting & Care
Soil & Water:Seed prefers sandy, fast draining dry to mesic soil in full sun. Fertilization will promote leafy growth and delay seed production for harvest.
Planting & Growing: Sow in the spring barely covering seed and keep moist and warm until germination (4-8 days). Thin or transplant to 2 feet apart. Also grows well in pots.
Harvesting & Storage:Seeds will be ready for harvest in approximately 120 days.
