Native to Paraguay and Brazil.

Hardy to 10 degrees F.

Evergreen shrub (zone 9 and up).

Tender herbaceous perennial in temperate northern areas;

may also be grown as an annual.

Its dried leaf is used for sweetening drinks and is purportedly 250 times sweeter than sugar.

Also used to treat wounds, hypoglycemia, and to aid digestion.

Heat-dependent germinator, does best if sown just under the surface, tamped well, kept evenly moist and in direct sun or under lights or in a greenhouse with temperatures from 80 to 85 degrees F. Germination in 1 to 2 weeks. Protect from slugs, which like the sweetness about as well as any other beast.

Grows well in pots or rich garden soil, in full sun to part shade, humidity, and plenty of water. Requires 80-85 degrees F for germination. Space 2' apart.
