Cool season, leafy, densely tufted perennial bunchgrass native to northern/western US at high elevations and cold, moist conditions. Languishes in southern California. Fine ornamental, attractive in massings, has compact dark evergreen foliage 12"—24" tall, flowering stalks of cloud-like fluffy puffs to 3' ft. Plant in fall. Prefers neutral, medium-light soils, soils, but can tolerate some acidity. Needs 20" of annual rainfall. Plant at 1—2 lbs/acre or 1 oz/1000 sq ft.
