Hordeum brachyantherum
An easy-to-grow "pioneer" grass, establishes rapidly, like an annual and is easy to grow from sea level to 10,000' with 18"—36" annual rainfall. Short-lived, tufted, and grows 12"—14" tall in the cool season. Good native cover crop in orchards and vineyards. Meadow Barley is especially useful in reclamation and erosion control situations—a great "pioneer" plant, which gradually gives way to more productive grasses as the site improves. Excellent nurse crop for slower-establishing natives such as Blue Wildrye and Molate Fescue. Tolerates drought as well as infertile, alkaline, compacted soil. Seedlings can take freezing temperatures when the plant matures; its tender foliage often turns reddish at low temperatures. Plant at 5—20 lb/acre or .25—0.5 lb/1000 sq ft.
