Medicago sativa
Perennial legume cover crop. For cold areas, prolonged freezing, and where elevation is above 5,000 ft. Zones 1-7. Popular hay plant great for cover cropping on fertile soils (alfalfas do not like acidic soils) with fair to good drainage. Excellent beneficial insect habitat. Can fix 200 lb Nitrogen/acre if given adequate Phosphorus, Calcium, and Sulfur. Provide great bee forage, yield up to 10 tons of organic matter per acre, and bring subsurface minerals to the surface.
Suitable for 3-5 year rotations. Requires summer irrigation and produce the most growth in warm weather. Grows 18-24". Plant according to your zone, see below. Plant shallowly in early fall or spring at 0.5-2 lb/1000 sq ft or 25 lb/acre. (Alfalfa inoculant required.)
