Flax is a cool season herbaceous annual plant with a short taproot system. Grows 1-4' tall. Pale blue to pale pink flowers and seed is produced in bolls or pods after flowering. Best growth and production when maximum plant growth and flowering occurs before temperatures reach 90 degrees. Planted in early fall in the west and Texas, plant afterspring grain planting in colder climates. Very good cold tolerance between seedlingand bloom stages. Very poor weed competitor, a clean seed bed is required. Prefersregular water on well drained medium to heavy textured soils. Nitrogen fertilizer will increase seed yield. Seed 45 lb/acre or 1-2 lb per 1,000 sq. ft at 1" deep or less, a drill is preferred method of planting.
