Raphanus sativus Annual China Rose is a unique winter radish. The radishes have a rose white—colored skin with a deep-rose color inside and are 6"—8" x 2" in size. The spicy flesh is delicious sliced fresh, and the radish tops are wonderful cooked in chicken broth until tender and seasoned with butter and pepper. This is a good storage variety. Soil & Water: Radishes prefer well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter. They have low nutrient requirements; especially avoid excess nitrogen to promote good root development. Preferred soil pH is 6.0—7.0. Planting & Growing: Cool weather is needed for best development. Sow seed directly wherever there is extra space in the garden. Radishes make good, living row markers for slower germinating crops like carrots. Harvesting & Storage: China Rose is a mid- to late-season variety. Harvest whenever they are large enough to use. For storage, harvest in late fall before frost and store in cool, moist conditions. Did You Know? Chinese winter radishes were brought to Europe by Jesuit missionaries around 1850.
