About Speedling® Transplant Trays
Speedlings® are our best selling transplant container. Reusable polystyrene tray with individualized pyramid shaped cells which virtually eliminate transplant shock. Advantages: undamaged roots (plants and all the soil pop out cleanly); no tearing or entangled roots, no spreading of root pests or diseases; a better root system (when the bottom of the tray is exposed to air, the taproot is "air pruned" promoting the growth of feeder roots that are directed downward instead of spiraling around the cell, enabling the plant to begin growing immediately after transplanting); reduced damping off (due to excellent drainage). In addition, 95% (minimum) of Speedling® transplants survive in the field. These trays reusable for many years. Extend their lifespan with Inserts, sold separately. Speedlings® should be stored out of the sun when not in use. Best results are obtained with soilless potting mixes (like our QuickRoot Soilless Potting Mix). Do not use sand in the mix. By design, these trays are meant to drain excess water via each cell's bottom hole, so do not place Speedling trays on material or in areas that can be damaged by water.
To select a tray, keep in mind that you want the cell to be filled with roots when you transplant. Plant can stay in the tray 1 month for every inch width of cell size. But, seed germinating time, as well as your own timing in starting your seedlings and your space limitations will factor into your choice. For instance, you'll want to consider downsizing the cell size if planting slow germinating seeds, if you get a late start, or if your space is limited. Though all Speedlings® will accommodate most vegetables, very general guidelines are: use smaller cells for cabbage and other cole crops, celery, leafy vegetables and herbs. Use medium cells for most any vegetable, especially tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, cauliflower, etc. Use medium to large cells for melons and squash. Note: The trays are 26-5⁄8" x 13-5⁄8" with slight variance on the height.
