Growing Our Pasture Mixes
IRRIGATED PASTURE MIXES If you are planting a permanent, irrigated pasture, do not skimp on seed quality. All of our mixes use improved varieties of grasses and legumes, in just the right ratios, to provide maximum yields of nutritious, palatable forage. The difference between a premium mix and a cheap one is just a few dollars per acre and the yield and quality of the better mixes will return the initial investment many times over. We recommend that you test your soil prior to planting. All pastures should have optimum levels of phosphorus, calcium, sulfur and trace minerals. Plant in Fall or Spring at 25 lb/acre if drilled, 35-45 lb/acre if broadcast. Allow adequate time for plants to establish before grazing. Rotational grazing is the best way to maintain an optimum stand. All legumes in our pasture mixes are inoculated for maximum seedling emergence, vigor and Nitrogen fixation. Note: The composition of the mixes may vary slightly, depending upon seasonal availability of seed.
DRYLAND PASTURE MIXES Almost all native ranges have deteriorated dramatically. Our mixes, when overseeded or planted into newly worked ground, will greatly improve the carrying capacity and quality of native rangeland and pasture. The key to successful introduction of these improved varieties is to allow them to re-seed in Spring by keeping livestock off during bloom and maturity. However, once the seeds are set, the animals may be returned to graze. These mixes need soil with a pH of about 6-6.5 and a full supply of calcium, sulfur and phosphorus. Drill the seed at 20 lb/acre or broadcast at 25 lb/acre. Plant as early in Fall as possible to take advantage of the rains, or Spring-plant with irrigation. Legumes are rhizocoated (inoculated) in all the mixes except Forage Blend. You may also want to consider some native perennial grasses (see the Native Grass section). Note: The composition of these mixes may vary slightly, depending on seasonal availability of seed.
