About Certified Organic, Certified Seed Potatoes
UNDERSTANDING CERTIFIED ORGANIC POTATOES & CERTIFIED SEED POTATOES
Certified Seed Potato is seed that has been certified by the State of Washington. Certified seed potato must meet state standards for minimal incidence of disease (not disease-free, a common misconception). To maintain these standards, the State requires that certified seed growers agree to comply with its spraying programs should any diseases occur in the grower's fields. Certifying seed has nothing to do with whether the seed is organic or conventionally grown. However, certified seed is usually conventionally grown because organic standards do not allow for disease control as required by the State. All of the seed we sell is certified potato seed.
Certified Organic Seed Potato is seed that is certified to be organic by a third party accredited organization to meet the USDA's National Organic Program (NOP) regulations. Certified organic has nothing to do with whether the seed is certified seed potato, although seed can be both. This is the case with our certified organic seed — it is certified organic seed (USDA Certified Organic) and certified seed potato (State of WA Certified Seed Potato). We also offer certified seed potato that is conventionally grown for our commercial customers. Pricing and varieties offered for each type of seed are shown on the chart below.
