Ordering Bare-Root Fruit Trees

ABOUT OUR BARE-ROOT FRUIT TREES

All our fruit & nut tree stock is grown by Dave Wilson Nursery, a nursery located in Hickman, California well-known for consistent high quality.

Size: Fruit and nut trees are ¾" diameter and 4'-5' tall (unless otherwise noted); stronger and older to give you the best chance for success and rapid fruit production. Our ornamentals sizes vary; see each plant description for details.

Rootstock: All fruit trees are grown on semi-dwarf rootstocks (except where noted) which are more expensive, but preferred, because at a mature height of approximately ½ to ¾ of a standard tree size, harvesting is easier. Specific rootstocks are noted in variety descriptions. Trees grown on standard rootstock are so noted.

Taste Test Winners: Dave Wilson Nursery has conducted formal fruit tastings since 1993 to make sure that they offer the best-tasting fruit varieties. The tastings feature hundreds of samples, and tasters do not know variety names until after the evaluation. Each Taste Test winner is noted as such.

Low Chill Varieties: If you are in a milder climate, look for varieties requiring less than 500 chill hours for the best success.

Colder Growing Regions: Varieties especially appropriate for colder zones including the high desert, Rockies, Upper Midwest and Northeast have "Favorite In Colder Regions" indicated in the description.

Non-Taxable: Fruit trees are not taxable in California.

ORDERING

Order Early: Usually, we order finite quantities of plant material far in advance, so we strongly encourage you to place your orders as early as possible. All orders are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, so when you order, the products are committed to you even if they do not ship until weeks or months later.

Ordering Deadline: Until sold out — typically by Late February

Available to Ship: Mid to December. Date is approximate, but please be aware that we will immediately ship your order when the stock becomes available (either arrives into our warehouse or becomes available to ship direct from a vendor). We will ship your order as soon as it becomes available unless you request that we delay shipping until after the holidays. After January 1, 2008 we cannot accommodate any delays in shipping.

SELECTING FRUIT TREES

Fruit and nut trees are a long-term investment and caring for them properly right from the start will ensure years of enjoyment and productivity. If you make good choices in variety and plan for your trees' needs early on, maintenance will be greatly minimized and productivity maximized as your trees mature.

Tree Requirements: For successful, long-term productivity, choose your fruit and nut trees carefully by providing necessary pollenizers, meeting chilling requirements, and planting varieties appropriate for your USDA Zone. We have provided zones for each variety we offer. Pollenizer varieties are noted for each tree we offer. If appropriate varieties are not already present within 50-100 yards, you may need to add tree(s) as necessary. You can also increase pollinating activity with the extraordinary Orchard Mason Bee. Also, consider chilling requirements, so please review the following explanation.

Chilling Requirements: Most fruiting plants need adequate cold dormancy before the beginning of their flowering period. For many plants, this dormancy period has been calculated and is known as its 'chilling requirement'. The chilling requirement is the minimum number of hours between 32°F and 45°F that the plant must be exposed to during its dormancy. We have provided the approximate chilling hours for each variety we offer. Generally, varieties that have higher chilling requirements bloom later than other varieties within the same species. Growers in mild winter climates will want to select varieties with low chilling requirements so that the cold needs of the plant can be met in most years. Chilling requirements should not be confused with cold hardiness. A plant with a lower chilling requirement may be grown in cold areas, but it will bloom sooner than high chill varieties and be vulnerable to frost damage. Information on the average chilling hour accumulation for your area is available from your local Master Gardeners or Ag Commissioner.

Harvest Dates: Review Dave Wilson's Fruit Tree Harvest Chart to help you plan for successive harvests. It lists approximate harvest dates for all the fruit and nut trees we offer.

Planting Location: Before you order your tree(s), carefully choose a planting location that provides maximum sunlight, good air circulation, and adequate drainage. Even an extra hour or two of shade a day can noticeably reduce growth and productivity. Choose a location where wind and breezes are not impeded by natural or man-made windbreaks. Planting in a location with good soil drainage is very important as poorly drained soil will stunt and may even kill trees by suffocating their root systems or harboring anaerobic soil pathogens. To test for adequate drainage, fill the planting hole with water and allow it to drain. Repeat. The maximum length of time it should take for all the water to drain out each time is 12-14 hours.

Installation and Care: Once you receive your tree, its long-term care begins. The literature you receive with your tree includes information you will need to get started right away, covering storage until planting, fertilizers, staking, watering and pruning.

GUARANTEE POLICIES

Delivery: All fruit and vegetable stock is guaranteed to arrive in good condition. If there is an obvious problem upon delivery (such as damage in transit), call us immediately, so that we can review the situation and come to a quick and equitable resolution. If any item proves unsatisfactory within 30 days of the date of purchase, you can return it for a full refund (excluding shipping charges), subject to the merchandise being in unused, like-new condition and in its original packaging. Please note that special orders, custom seed mixes, live plants (for example, flower bulbs, bare-root trees and berries, onions, garlic, potatoes, and so forth) and beneficial insects are not returnable unless there is an obvious problem upon delivery (if so, call us immediately). Using the return form with your order, send the product back to us securely wrapped, freight prepaid and insured against loss or damage. If a defective product is still under the manufacturer's warranty, we may request that you ship it directly to the manufacturer, so please always call us first.

Bare-root Limited Replacement Guarantee: If your bare-root tree, kiwi, grape, artichoke, asparagus, or berry does not leaf out, contact our Customer Service by June 1st and return the dead plant to us for inspection. We will issue you a credit for the paid price of that plant (excluding freight) provided it does not show damage (from rodent, mechanical…etc) or root rot. This credit is redeemable toward the purchase of any other bare-root item of your choice the following year (Note: we reserve the right to not issue credit for replacement of already replaced items). Fig, pomegranate, and walnut trees are tricky to grow so our credit for these varieties is limited to 50% of the purchase price. This guarantee applies ONLY to Dave Wilson bare-root or potted trees (fruit and nut), artichokes, asparagus, grape vines, kiwi vines, blueberries, currants, caneberries, strawberries, and horseradish. This guarantee does not apply to flower bulbs, citrus trees, olive trees, onions, leeks, shallots, garlic, potatoes, native plants, or conifer seedlings.

Limitation of Remedy: We warrant to the extent of the purchase price only that the seeds or plants sold hereunder are as described on the label within recognized tolerances. No other warranty is given, expressed or implied, (1) of the merchantability or fitness of the seeds or plants for any particular purpose, or (2) against loss due to any cause. We cannot accept any responsibility for the many uncontrollable growing and climatic conditions (soil preparation, fertilization, weed and pest control, temperature control, irrigation . . . , etc.) that must be met to insure the success of your crop(s).
