Hordeum brachyantherum An easy-to-grow pioneer grass, establishes rapidly, like an annual and is easy to grow from sea level to 10,000' with 18"-36 annual rainfall. Short-lived, tufted, and grows 12"-14 tall in the cool season. Good native cover crop in orchards and vineyards. Meadow Barley is especially useful in reclamation and erosion control situations a great pioneer plant, which gradually gives way to more productive grasses as the site improves. Excellent nurse crop for slower-establishing natives such as Blue Wildrye and Molate Fescue. Tolerates drought as well as infertile, alkaline, compacted soil. Seedlings can take freezing temperatures when the plant matures; its tender foliage often turns reddish at low temperatures. Plant at 5-20 lb/acre or .25-0.5 lb/1000 sq ft.
