Description

Accurately measures acidity or alkalinity of any liquid sample to 0.1 pH units. The pH Testr 10 is the latest version of the Oakton pH meter.

For testing soil, mix the sample with distilled water, and dip meter into the solution to obtain a reading. Complete instructions included. In soil, pH extremes limit biological activity, humus formation, and plant growth.

Frequent monitoring is essential, as soil pH changes rapidly during fertilization, irrigation, and even the phases of the moon.

For accurate readings, it is necessary to calibrate the meter, using reference buffer solutions, purchased separately. The 7.0 solution (TM 356) is the best one to use for primary calibration. If accurate readings below pH 6.0 are consistently needed, the 4.0 (TM354) solution is also recommended. For best calibration and accuracy, use both the 7.0 and the 4.0 solutions.

The manufacturer recommends that you test the calibration on the meter each day you use it.

Soil Sampling: Scoop up soil into a clean, dry plastic jar or plastic bag. Remove stones and crush any clumps of soil for better results. Gather two to three representative samples of each soil sample to confirm results. No sample preparation or preservative required.

Preparing Soil for Testing:

  • Place soil sample about ¾ full in sample jar and add distilled water to cover soil.
  • Cap jar and shake the soil vigorously a few times.
  • Let mixture stand 10 minutes to dissolve the salts in the soil.
  • Calibrate the pH tester with a pH 7 and a pH 10 buffer solution.
  • Remove the cap and place the pH tester into the wet soil slurry.
  • Measure pH and record measurement.
