Description

Bean - Romano - Phaseolus vulgaris

Tender Annual Pole. Snap. Heirloom. Superb flavor and the lack of strings make this Italian bean a winner. The flat shape of the bean pod is a novelty for the summer table. A big producer of tender beans, Romano is also resistant to mosaic virus.

Did You Know? Plant pole beans at the northern end of your vegetable bed or garden to keep the tall vines from shading out other vegetables and herbs.

Soil & Water: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter with a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, moderately at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering.

Planting & Growing: Start indoors in short-season climates. Use fiber pots or soil blocks because beans do not like to be transplanted. In other climates beans prefer to be seeded directly once soils have reached at least 65°F after the last frost. Make small, successive plantings every 10 days for a continuous harvest.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest just as the beans reach pencil thickness, if they are allowed to get larger the become tough. These beans can be eaten fresh, canned or frozen.
