Planting & Care

  • Fall-planted spuds produce outstanding yields by May. If your area experiences hard winters (USDA Zones 1–7), or you tend to have long, wet spring seasons when rot might be a problem, plant potatoes in the spring.
  • One pound of seed potatoes will plant a row approximately 8' long with seed pieces spaced at 8 - 12" apart.
  • Plan on 1,200 lb/acre (600 lb of fingerlings) when rows are spaced 36" apart with 12" between plants.
  • Under optimal conditions, you can expect to harvest 10–15 pounds of potatoes for every pound of seed potato planted.

Guarantee

We guarantee the perishable items we sell to be in good, viable condition when we sell them. Perishable items include, but are not limited to, garlic bulbs, flower bulbs, seed potatoes, onion sets & transplants, bare-root trees, vegetable crowns… etc. If your perishable item arrives in substandard condition, take photographs and please contact us within 3 days of the purchase date (or delivery date) and we will provide you with a refund of the purchase price (excluding shipping costs), or a replacement. Accordingly, we urge you to open any boxes marked as “Perishable” immediately upon receiving them and inspect the shipment thoroughly (do not crack open heads of garlic, we do not accept claims on cracked garlic). Because some perishable items can deteriorate very quickly, we cannot accept any claims beyond the 3-day time frame as it becomes too difficult to determine if these items were delivered in substandard condition, or if they turned into such substandard condition because of having been improperly cared for or stored once delivered.

Best potatoes ever

I have never had a better tasting potato. We grew these organically in a big container and they were a very big surprise. When we harvested them they were small and had very tender, thin, dark purple skin. We steamed them whole and mashed them to find the whitest potato with the darkest skin I've ever seen. Tasted amazing.

Lovely, delicate flavour!

Our first time growing potatoes. We planted this along with three other varieties, in Belmont, CA (in nearly-always chilly, windy, but not-too-foggy hills). In 2.5 months (mid-April thru late June), four pounds of seed potatoes (one pound per variety) in a single, 4'x6' biointensive planted bed, this type yielded just under 7 pounds of potatoes for the single pound of seed we planted. Skins were largely scraped up with the horrible heavy clay and rock "soil" we have here, so none could be saved for seed this time, but OMG, the flavour!! Snowy white, and a delicate, sweet, almost flowery taste. Perfect for parsley potatoes, or light-flavored potato salads. Will certainly plant again. This time, in a potato tower hilled up with fluffy compost.
