Lettuce - Tricolored Romaine Mix - Lactuca sativa
Hardy Annual Heirloom. A tricolor blend of equal parts of the heirloom lettuces Silvia, Vivian, and Freckles. Silvia has sweet tender hearts and striking burgundy leaves. Vivian is a medium green romaine noted for its texture which is similar to a Bibb type lettuce. Freckles is a tender, long-standing bi-color romaine. The seeds are not color coded.
Soil and Water: Lettuce likes rich, well-drained, loose soil. Keep the plants moist, not waterlogged. Frequent short watering is best.
Planting and Growing: Start seeds indoors 4 weeks before transplanting outside, or sow seed directly as soon as the soil is workable. Make successive plantings every 10-14 days for a continuous harvest. In mild climates, lettuce can be sown from spring through fall.
Harvesting and Storage: Harvest by cutting whole head at the soil line. Harvest when they are at a good size, but while they are still young and tender.
Did You Know? The color of lettuce has a lot to do with the temperature and sunlight the plant receives.

I grew this lettuce for the first time last year, and have my seed ready to start for this year. This romaine has great flavor, very tender, and crispy. The colors are beautiful in the garden. I planted some in my flower bed too, it fit right in. Does really well in cool, high mountain gardens. I'll be planting this every year.Review by Idaho Zone 4 (on 3/23/13)
