Melon - Jaune Canary - Cucumis melo
Tender Annual Heirloom. Not a native of the Canary Islands, this melon is named Jaune (French for yellow) and Canary for its bright yellow skin. The oblong melon is a favorite in many Asian cuisines. The flavor of its white flesh is subtle and sweet with depth.
Soil and Water: Melons like moderately rich, well-drained soils with plenty of phosphorous and potassium and a pH of 6.0-6.8. For flavorful fruits, melons need moderate water as seedlings, low water before transplanting, moderate water during growth, and low, even water during fruit development.
Planting and Growing: Start seeds indoors 2-3 weeks before the last frost or seed directly after the last frost. Melons need plentiful heat to develop; use plastic mulch and row covers in cooler climates. Do not plant melons in the same place for 5 years.
Harvesting and Storage: The melon starts green with no netting and a few hairs, the mature melon turns canary yellow, loses it hair, and develops netting at the stem end of the fruit. The blossom end softens as the melon ripens. Cut the ripe melon from the vine; it will not slip from the vine.
Did You Know? The Jaune Canary melon has little fragrance on the vine, so judge ripeness by its appearance.
