Stevia - - Stevia rebaudiana
Tender Perennial grown as Annual Stevia leaves are 30 times as sweet as sugar, and are an herbal sugar substitute. Use them fresh, infused in a liquid, dry, or powdered. Stevia seeds can have a low germination rate.
Soil and Water: Provide rich, moist, well-drained soil, and humidity. Native soil is pH 4-5, but will tolerate other soils.
Planting and Growing: Relies on warm temperatures for germination and growth, in the summer garden or a greenhouse. Press seeds on damp soil. Plant out in the garden, a container, or grow in a greenhouse. Mulch to retain soil moisture.
Harvesting and Storage: Cut fresh leaves to use at any time. Before first frost, cut branches and hang to dry. One plant should provide up to 1/2 lb. of dry leaves.
