Description

Tomato - Stupice - Lycopersicon lycopersicum

Tender Annual Semideterminate. Heirloom. Stupice is a popular, vigorous plant which yields abundant, early 3-6 ounce red fruit. Its good, potato-leaf foliage results in high quality, round, crimson fruit. This Czechoslovakian-bred vine has exceptional flavor and ripens very early.

Did You Know? Stupice is pronounced Stoo-PEECH-ka and came to the United States in 1976 from the Czech Republic.

Soil & Water: Tomatoes love fertile soil rich in organic matter. Add plenty of compost prior to planting. Soil pH is preferred between 5.5-7.0. Soak the soil 4"-6" deep at 7-day intervals.

Planting & Growing: Sow seeds in flats 6-8 weeks before the last frost and thin to 2" apart after the first true leaves appear. Before transplanting after the last frost, harden off the plants by placing them outdoors for a few hours to start, increasing the amount of time each day until they are accustomed to a full day of sunlight.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when individual fruits give slightly under finger pressure; the shoulders may not have changed color yet.

Reviews

First to Produce!

I started Stupice this year after reading a review in Mother Earth News late last year. Living in zone 9B, I'm able to start my seeds early and get them outside soon, so I have been harvesting pingpong ball sized Stupice tomatoes since May 10th. The flavor is delicious the color is absolutely stunning. I don't know if these will can well, though, since they are small and very juicy. It may be a good tomato to dry instead.

If I had to pick a favorite

I eagerly await these ping pong ball sized gems every summer. Love the fact they are early so usually the first tomatoes ready. Most get eaten before they make it to the house. Delicious!
