Planting & Care
Soil & Water:Pumpkins require rich, fertile soil and room to ramble. Vines need ample water and several feedings for best yields.
Planting & Growing:Sow seed in full sun when night temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Make circular mounds 3 feet across and 6 feet apart.. Plant 4-5 seeds in center of mound, one inch deep and thin to the strongest 3 so vines have room to grow and produce.
To grow in rows, sow groups of 3 seeds 2 feet apart in rows 4 feet apart. Thin to one strong seedling per group.
May be grown up trellises or fences to conserve space.
Harvesting & Storage: Pumpkins need to mature before harvest. Wait to pick when rinds are fully deep orange and tough enough to resist a fingernail pierce and vines have died back. Cut from vines, leaving a good stem. Let cure in the sun for 10 days then store in a cool dry place for several months.
