Use with yellow sticky traps PIT855. Highly effective, 8-10 week lure. In single tree/small orchard stands use 1 to 2 baited traps per tree. Olive fruit fly larvae attack the fruit of the olive tree, causing premature fruit drop or pulp destruction. At least one trap per tree for mass trapping.

Our Pest Wizard Olive Fruit Fly (Dacus olea) Lure does not employ yeast like many other brands. It is a much more effective 2-component combo lure in a bifurcated slow release pouch. The white crystalline powder in the bottom segment enhances fly attraction to the yellow adhesive card in addition to color attraction. A vial, located in the top segment of the lure pack is a female sex pheromone.

Performance: We highly recommend that you use the PIT855 Pest Wizard brand of yellow sticky traps. The special color of these particular un-baited yellow cards attract 2 to 6 times more flies than other brands (2 USDA and 1 Texas A&M study). The lure itself serves to narrow attraction to both male and female adults of the species. The main cost component of the lure is the pheromone that is more costly to formulate than many other lures. Lure life is 8 to 10 weeks.

Dacus olea can live for a long time. Females begin piercing fruit skin to deposit a single egg in early August. Olive juice from the pierced olive repels other females for about 5 days. A female may lay up to 400 eggs which take 30 to 40 days to hatch. All but the last generation of larvae (maggots) remain inside the fruit where they pupate. The last generation of larvae pupate in soil. There are 2 to 5 generations per season.

Trapping out: One trap per tree will greatly reduce infestation. Two traps increases effectiveness. Baited traps should be hung on the south side the tree outside the canopy. Purchase additional yellow trap 4-packs PIT855 for replacement if the yellow sticky traps become full or are used in dusty conditions. The lure can be moved from trap to trap.

Cultural control: Thoroughly remove all fruit from trees to prevent over-wintering. Plant resistant olive varieties. Prune trees heavily to increase light penetration and air movement which discourages the fly. IMPORTANT: Ornamental olive trees can serve as a source of olive fruit flies infesting nearby fruited trees since adults are capable of flying long distances. Ornamentals eliminate dropping fruit and staining but still host the fly so hanging baited traps in them is still an important thing to do as we combat this invasion that threatens to destroy 100% of our olive output.
