Planting & Care

Soil & Water:Pumpkins require rich, fertile soil and room to ramble. Vines need ample water and several feedings (approximately every three weeks) for best yields.

Planting & Growing:Sow seed in full sun when night temperatures are consistently above 50 degrees. Make circular mounds 3 feet across and 6 feet apart.. Plant 4 seeds in center of mound, one inch deep and thin to the strongest 2 so vines have room to grow and produce. To concentrate energy into giant size pumpkins pinch off all but one fruit per vine when about basketball size. Place remaining pumpkins on good size square of plywood to ripen without soil contact.

Harvesting & Storage: Pumpkins need to mature before harvest. Wait to pick when rinds are fully deep orange and tough enough to resist a fingernail pierce. Cut from vines, leaving a good stem. Let cure in the sun for 10 days then store in a cool dry place for several months. Good ornamental as well as baker.
