Oakton EC Meter - TM360

  • In stock. Ships from our warehouse in Northern California.

The Electrical Conductivity Meter is waterproof, floatable and comes with a replaceable stainless steel electrode. Microprocessor-based for easy calibration. Temperature compensating. Instructions included. Measures electrical conductivity of the soil, which is indicative of the available nutrient level.

To be available for your crops, the major and minor nutrients in your soil must be in ionic form (either positively charged cations or negatively charged anions). The electrical charge produced by these ions is what is measured by the EC meter. The unit of measure is in microSiemens/cm. Carey Reams referred to this measure of the electrical conductivity or energy of the soil as ERGS (Energy Released per Gram of Soil).

For most crops, the soil's conductivity or mobile ion reading should be between 200 and 600 microSiemens/cm. Higher levels are required for top production, especially during active growth phases. Levels below 200 indicate that there are not enough mobile nutrients available to the plant, so little crop growth is occurring. Levels above 1000 usually mean that there is an excess salt problem.

EC meters can also test fertilizers, soil amendments, and compost to determine the most effective fertilization strategies. It can also test water purity. A must for all farmers!
