We have a huge gopher problem and I put all of my plants in gopher baskets. It's extra work to dig the hole a little bigger and deeper than you would for just the plant, but it's well worth it! You can even see the gopher tunnels around the plants! My fruit trees, vegetable plants and ornamental plants have survived because of the baskets.
