Rio Red is One of the Sweetest Grapefruits

  • Semi-dwarf on Cuban Shaddock rootstock
  • Zones: 9-10 (protect when temperature drops below 28°F)
  • Fruit: Classic red grapefruit flavor, sweeter than most grapefruits, with bright colored flesh and a light pink blush on the skin. Ripens in winter and holds on the tree into summer, needs heat to sweeten the fruit. Grow your own grapefruit juice, also a great addition to salads.
  • Facts of note: Relatively new variety, introduced in 1984 from the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. More cold tolerant than other grapefruits, but performs best in warm climates. Attractive tree produces an abundance of fruit.

About Our Citrus

Add a little zest to your garden! Citrus trees are potted, evergreen, semi-dwarf, 1 ½-years-old, pencil caliper, 18”-24” tall measured from the bottom of the pot to the top of the tree. They will, with good care, produce fragrant, self-pollinating flowers and wonderful fruit. Mature height is 8’–12’, but can be pruned to suit in ground or in containers.

Choose a sunny location, in well drained soil, sheltered from wind. They are affected by freezing temperatures, and in many locales require frost protection.

These are evergreen trees and thus the dormant bare root guarantee does not apply. Your trees will arrive in good, viable condition. Contact us immediately if they do not. Non-taxable.
