Gourd - Baby Bottle - Lagenaria siceraria
Tender Annual A miniature version of the well-known, pear-shaped Birdhouse Gourd. The gourds set in clusters and grow to 4" long and about 2" in diameter. These miniature gourds are great for crafting, Christmas ornaments, or doll-making.
Soil and Water: Gourds will benefit from the addition of compost and well composted manure worked into the soil prior to planting. Water regularly and generously, especially in later fruit development, with 1" of rain or equivalent per week.
Planting and Growing: Direct seed as soon as frost danger is past. Plant 5-6 seeds to a hill or grow alongside a fence or trellis. Fruit will develop best if not in direct contact with the soil. Pinching the ends of the vines off once a good length is reached will encourage lateral branching and more gourds.
Harvesting and Storage: The gourds can be harvested when pale green and rinsed in a 9:1 bleach solution and then hung to dry in a warm, dry location for 3-4 weeks. They can also be harvested once the vine naturally dies down after frost and after the gourds have turned brown and the seeds rattle inside.
Did You Know? Bottle Gourds flower at night-time and need nocturnal insects to complete the pollination process.
