Gourd - Large Mix - Lagenaria siceraria
Tender Annual This mix of equal parts Swan,Bottle, Bushel, Snake, Maranka, and Dipper gourds is ideal for crafts. Make bird-houses, containers, and other craft projects from these varied gourds. The seeds are not color coded.
Soil and Water: Gourds will benefit from the addition of compost and well composted manure worked into the soil prior to planting. Water regularly and generously, especially in later fruit development, with 1" of rain or equivalent per week.
Planting and Growing: Direct seed as soon as frost danger is past. Soaking seeds for 24 hours prior to planting may improve germination. Plant 5-6 seeds to a hill or grow alongside a fence or trellis. Fruit will develop best if not in direct contact with the soil. Pinching the ends of the vines off once a good length is reached will encourage lateral branching and more gourds.
Harvesting and Storage: The gourds can be harvested when pale green and rinsed in a 9:1 bleach solution and then hung to dry in a warm, dry location for 3-4 weeks. They can also be harvested once the vine naturally dies down after frost and after the gourds have turned brown and the seeds rattle inside.
