Lettuce - Michelle - Lactuca sativa
Hardy Annual This crisp Batavian lettuce hails from France. Michelle grows tall, upright, green heads that show an attractive a red tinge in cool weather and are all green in summer. This is a great summer lettuce since it resists tip burn and bolting.
Soil and Water: Lettuce likes full sun except in hot summer climates where it prefers some shade, especially in the afternoon. Add plenty of compost to the soil to encourage rapid growth. Water evenly and moderately to prevent bitterness. Liquid fertilizer is not recommended as concentrations tend to affect the taste of the leaves.
Planting and Growing: Start seeds indoors 4 weeks before transplanting outside, or sow seed directly as soon as the soil is workable. Make successive plantings every 10-14 days for a continuous harvest. In mild climates, lettuce can be sown from spring through fall.
Harvesting and Storage: Harvest the entire plant when mature, but still young and crisp. All lettuces are at their best when picked as needed and used immediately. Head lettuce will only last a few days in the refrigerator before deteriorating.
Did You Know? There is no way to preserve lettuce; it cannot be pickled, frozen, dried, canned or salted.
