Kiwi Vines

PLEASE READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Our trees will come to you topped off at approx. 3 ft in height to put the tree’s stored energy first into root development vs. foliage production.

When placing your orders for potted tree/plants, please be aware that AS SOON as the potted tree/plants are available to ship (Dec. for trees, Jan. for plants), we will begin shipping IMMEDIATELY - no matter where you are located !!!

There are several factors why we must ship immediately:

  • We can only ship most potted tree/plants when they are dormant. With us being located in CA, trees/plants can come out of dormancy well before the rest of the nation is ready to plant.
  • We receive our potted tree/plants in successive deliveries. We need to move them out quickly, as our space is limited.
  • It is very challenging, if not impossible, to keep track of who gets what when dealing with ten's of thousands of trees/plants and 200 varieties over 3 months, hence we must adhere to our policy.

ATTENTION "POLAR VORTEX" AFFECTED CUSTOMERS

When your order arrives, you should remove it from the outside elements before nightfall. If you will not be present at the destination when the order will be delivered, you should either ship the order to another location or make sure someone will be there to take care of your order.

While your order is hardy enough to withstand freezing temperatures in its box, you definitely should not leave it outside in sub-zero temperatures for days on end.

AS IMPORTANTLY, you then need to open the box, remove the potted tree/plants from their shipping box, store them in a basement, cellar or garage, and keep them moist until you are able to plant them in the ground in Spring.

About Kiwi Vines

Kiwi fruit grow on vigorous vines. Grow them on trellises or espalier them along fences or walls for ornamental landscaping that also delivers fruit high in Vitamin C. Hardy kiwi vines, like the Issai, will produce smooth fruit in a range of climates in USDA zones 4-9. Issai is also a convenient vine since it is self-fruitful (meaning it produces both male and female flowers).

Want the familiar fuzz? Find those on our tender kiwi vines. Even the tender vines need some winter chill, so they do best in USDA zones 7-9. You’ll need at least one male (Tomuri) and one female (Vincent) vine for pollination. Remember, the prime requirements for kiwis are good drainage and ample water. Pull any perennial weeds from the site. In our video Tricia added a sprinkler to her drip irrigation system to give her vine the moist, but not waterlogged, soil it needs for good root growth. Water is key for kiwis to bear their heavy crops.

Even though the Issai vines are winter hardy while dormant, in their youth those vines can be winter killed. In the wintertime it’s a good idea to wrap the trunk of the hardy kiwi vine while it is 1 - 4 years old.

Kiwi vines will cooperate with a number of trellising styles. You can plant them at the corners of a large arbor, train them along trellises, or grow them espalier style along fences. Choose your support system and install it before you plant the kiwi vines. The hardy kiwi vines we carry are moderately vigorous and will grow about 6’ - 12’ a year, much less than their tender, fuzzy cousins that can grow as much as 30’ in a year.

All our bare root trees and berries come with a Limited Replacement Guarantee.
