Rhubarb Crowns

When placing your bare root orders, please be aware that AS SOON as the trees/plants arrive in stock (Dec. for trees, Jan. for plants), we will begin shipping IMMEDIATELY - no matter where you are located !!!

There are several factors why we must ship immediately:

  • We can only ship bare root items when they are dormant. With us being located in CA, trees/plants can come out of dormancy well before the rest of the nation is ready to plant. Once they begin to bud out, we are unable to ship.
  • We receive our bare root items in successive deliveries. We need to move them out quickly, as our space is quite limited.
  • It is very challenging, if not impossible, to keep track of who gets what when dealing with 20,000 trees and 200 varieties over 3 months, hence we must adhere to our policy.


When your order arrives, you should remove it from the outside elements before nightfall, preferably sooner. If you will not be present at the shipping destination when the order will be delivered, you should either ship the order to another location or make sure someone will be there to take care of your order.

While your order is hardy enough to withstand freezing temperatures in its box, you cannot leave it outside in sub-zero temperatures for days and expect it to survive.

AS IMPORTANTLY, you then need to open the box, remove the trees/plants from the plastic bag, store the trees/plants in a basement-cellar-garage, cover their roots with sand-dirt-sawdust-wood chips and keep them moist until you are able to plant them in the ground.

About Rhubarb Crowns

Rhubarb is a cool season, perennial plant that is very winter hardy and resistant to drought. Rhubarb is deer resistant and with its lovely dark green leaves and green, pink or red stalks it has a lot of front yard appeal. Following a season of growth the rhubarb crown becomes dormant. Temperatures below 40° F are required to stimulate bud break and subsequent growth.

The first shoots to appear in the spring are edible petioles and leaves. These emerge sequentially as long as temperatures remain cool (below 90° F). The petioles are the tasty part of the plant and are perfect for making crisps, pies, and sauces. Don't eat the leaves since they have high levels of the poison, oxalic acid. As temperatures increase, top growth is suppressed, even appearing dormant in periods of extreme heat.

Let your rhubarb grow unharvested the first year in the ground. The next season you can harvest the plant lightly and only the first two weeks of the season. The third year the plant can tolerate a full 8-10 week harvest. The youngest stalks are the tastiest, harvest as soon as the leaf unfolds. Harvest only one third of the stalks at a time. Stop the harvest when the plant starts to grow slender stalks, that's the plant signaling it is low on reserves.
