Cereal Grains
The grains and pseudo-grains we offer are grown with only OMRI listed fertilizers, no pesticides of any kind and are untreated non-GMO seeds and are grown on organic certified land. You may find a few more weed seeds than usual (mostly mustard) mixed with the seed, since this seed is hand cleaned. We are offering several grains and pseudo-grains for growers who want to grow their own grains. Most grains are easy to grow, but there is more involved than just growing. There is harvesting, threshing and storing. We highly recommend the book “Homegrown Whole Grains” by Sara Pitzer. The varieties we offer have done well in California, especially Northern California. Some will do well in other parts of the country, but there are other varieties that may be more suitable for other regions across the country. It is good to check with your local extension service or local farmers to see what grows best in your area. Warning: Ergot is a disease of cereals that can reduce yields and cause toxic reactions in people and animals. It is most common in rye or triticale, but can occur in other cereals and other grasses, including weed grasses. If it is present, it is easy to see because the fungus usually appears as a dark (purple-black) elongated “sclerotia” that replaces some of the seeds in the seed head. Do not consume or feed grain to animals if there is evidence of ergot. Wet conditions during flowering favor the disease. The best control is to rotate crops. Do not plant cereal grains where other grains were planted the previous season. |
