Made our apples deer safe

We have used these bags for many years with wonderful success. As our trees have grown bigger, the job of putting them on has gotten harder, but it is still worth it to not have to spray. A bonus is that when deer came through early last fall, they ate our neighbors\' apples, but not ours. After knocking a couple apples down, and not getting through the mesh, they went on.

Got Worms? (in your apples?)

I have been using these for many years with good success. The first key point is to put them on right after fruit thinning when the fruit is about the size of a small walnut. The second key point is to slip them over the fruit without opening them up any larger than the fruit so the opening stays fairly small then twist the sleeve to make a snug fit around the fruit stem. Leave plenty of sleeve beyond the tip of the fruit to allow for fruit growth. The moths can and will find the opening if you don't twist the opening closed. these are not practical for large orchards as it takes awhile to put them on. The few years I did not use them I got maybe 1%-5% worm free apples. The years I did use them I get about 1% apples with worms, mostly because the growing fruit created a small opening for the moths to get in. The person who gave these 1 star most likely put them on after the moths laid eggs in the fruit and the hole in the "sock" is where the mature maggot chewed its way out to pupate under the tree and emerge as a moth in the spring.

Nope.

I put these on my apples in April and also hung pheromone traps to combat codling moth. Well now it's June and I see holes where the worms have eaten right through the nylon on their way into the apple! Total fail.

My new favorite gardening trick

I love this product! My apples went from 100% worm filled to 100% worm FREE just by applying these! No chemicals, no need to spray anything. And best of all, they are still in great shape after one season so I can use them again!

They work !!

The time it took to put these on our Asian pears was well worth the effort. No worms. I plan on reusing the mesh again this year making the investment worth the purchase price.
