Organic Chives, Common (1/4 lb)

Organic Chives, Common (1/4 lb)

Great Companion Plant in the Garden

Chives - Common - Allium schoenoprasum

Hardy Perennial The thin, round leaves of chives are commonly used in soups and sauces. The plant grows in clumps up to 12" high and produces lavender flowers in midsummer. Chives are useful as a companion plant throughout the garden.

Did You Know? Freeze-drying is the best drying method to preserve the chive's delicate flavor.

Soil & Water: Chives like loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Water evenly and moderately while establishing.

Planting & Growing: Start 4-6 weeks before the last frost or sow directly once soils have reached 55°F. Chives grow slowly and usually need about a year of growth before they can be routinely harvested. They can be potted and moved indoors to provide a fresh supply for cooking all year.

Harvesting & Storage: Snip leaves when large enough to use. The flowers are also edible and have a mild oniony flavor. Harvest flowers before they open completely to avoid reseeding tendencies.

Soil Temperature: 60-85°F
Planting Depth: 1/16"
Germination: 7-14 Days
Height At Maturity: 8"-14"
Days To Maturity: 90-100 Days
Sun/Shade: Full Sun
