Soil and Water: Kale will thrive in any moderately fertile soil with good drainage, organic matter, and a pH range of 5.5-6.5. It needs regular, even watering to avoid bitterness.
Planting and Growing: Start indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost. Move outdoors just before the last frost. Can also direct seed in the fall 3 months before the first frost. Kale is most tender and delicious after a frost. Harvest can continue even after snow. Cover with light row cover as a barrier to cabbage worms.
Harvesting & Storage: Harvest leaves from the bottom up as the plant grows. Flavor improves after light frost exposure.
