Soil and Water: Onions prefer loose, fertile, friable, well-drained soil with plenty of added organic matter. They do best in soils with a pH of 6.0 -7.0. Their shallow root system is sensitive to fluctuations in water. Mulch to conserve water and control weeds.
Planting and Growing: Sow seeds indoors in flats in early spring or sow seed outdoors as soon as the soil is workable. Cut off seed heads as they form.
Harvesting & Storage: Lift when onions have reached desired size or for storage onions, harvest when tops dry and flop over. After lifting, hang outside, in the shade, to dry for at least 7 days. Store in ventilated, cool, dry area.
