Broadfork Metal Handle 4-Tines

Broadfork Metal Handle 4-Tines

Breaks Up and Aerates Heavily Compacted Soil

The broadfork is a gardening tool that is widely used in Europe and is growing in popularity in the USA. Broadforks are excellent for breaking open compacted soils deeper than with a rototiller or a spade. This tool will deeply aerate your soil, increase water percolation, and preserve soil structure.

In comparison, a rototiller pulverizes soil into a fine dust that compacts and hardens after the first rains. The 12” tines are 2” longer than the main competitor’s broadforks.

Our broadfork weighs less than 20 lbs. making it easy to carry and maneuver in the garden than heavier broadforks. It is best to broadcast compost and soil amendments prior to broadforking, as the amendments will trickle down into the cracks. This is especially useful for rock phosphate, since phosphorus is leached very slowly.

Broadforks feature:

  • ¼” Thick tempered steel tines. We've put these tines to the ultimate test. Even in roots, rocks, and clay they're nearly impossible to bend.
  • Weighted & Balanced For All Day Use - our broadfork is designed with the average gardener in mind, we could have made it bigger, but ultimately we wanted you to be able to easily use it all day.
  • 13" Long Tines - The perfect length for aerating your garden soil. Tines longer than 12" make the tool hard to use for average sized gardeners.
  • 1½" Wide Square Treadbar - Making a square treadbar (round steel is very slippery, especially in the mud) creates a more stable place for you to stand. 1½" is plenty wide for your feet to be comfortable, secure, & stable.
  • 48 inch long handles are steel. Detachable, comes with pins to hold in place.
  • Balanced design, stout metal handles, reinforced tines, and a wider treadbar - a tool that is easy to handle, extremely durable, totally reliable, and far easier on your body to use.
  • Human powered, no smelly fumes, no jolting noise, no pollution, & it saves earthworms.
  • Proudly Made in the U.S.A. - Hand made in Grass Valley, CA.

LOVE this tool!

For no-till gardening, this is the way to go! Last year, I used a shovel (spade) to turn-in compost, and this broad fork has been a true game-changer for me this year. I was concerned that I wouldn't have enough upper body strength to use it, but with the right technique, strength isn't really necessary.

The perfect sustainable garden tool

After spending a lot of time and money repairing my moody tiller, it still has trouble running and is way too heavy for me to operate. So for my birthday my husband bought me this broad fork and it’s been a great replacement! Zero down time in the shop waiting for parts, no fumes or cutting out in the middle of a row. It breaks up garden soil nicely. The rows have better drainage now than when being tilled. I would imagine the better your soil, the easier this tool would be to use. My garden rows are fallow and being revived so it was a bit of a workout but as the rows are amended over time with more sandy loam and organic matter I can see this tool getting easier and easier to use. I especially like that it’s made locally in Grass Valley because so many tools come from overseas or the east coast. The grip tape on the foot bar works very well. The rubber handles grips are well made. The steel construction is solid. My only concern is the D ring with the latch has some play where it holds the handles in place. But it wasn’t a problem when working the rows. I like that I can listen to the woodpeckers, blue jays, the Sierra breeze in the pines and KVMR on the radio while working this broad fork in my garden. I’m a discerning middle aged woman and I endorse this product!

Easy to Use

This broadfork was great to till the soil without killing the microorganisms and earthworms. It was a good work out too. So easy to use!
