Description

Artichoke - Imperial Star - Cynara scolymus

Tender Perennial Imperial Star was bred to produce artichokes in one season as an annual, perfect for colder climates. In warm areas, zone 7 and up, treat as a perennial and leave for 6-7 years until they need to be divided. Grow as a dramatic part of an edible landscape, or in rows. Their ideal climate is a moist, coastal area.

Soil & Water: Artichokes need rich soil with good tilth and drainage. Add compost months before you plant the seeds, balanced fertilizer just before planting, and nitrogen fertilizer throughout the growing season. Water thoroughly once a week, wetting entire root system.

Planting & Growing: Sow indoors 8-12 weeks before the last frost. Place seeds 1/4" apart and 1/4" deep in moist soilless mix in 2-4" containers. Grow at 60-70°F daytime and 50-60°F nighttime. Transplant 6-8 week old plants 4'-6' apart, in rows 8' apart or as part of an ornamental landscape. Time the transplanting so plants get 8-10 days of 50°F for vernalization to promote budding. Protect from frost. Direct sow: if winter low is above 14°F plant seeds in fall in moist soil and harvest in spring.

Harvesting & Storage: Cut artichokes when they are 2"-4" in diameter, leaving a stem of about 2". Refrigerate up to 3 weeks.

Did You Know? Imperial Star was developed so that colder climates could produce artichokes in one season.
