Planting & Care

Soil & Water: Provide squash plants with deep mounds of organic matter, rich soil, and heavy, even water. All squash are extremely frost sensitive, so use plastic mulches to heat soils in early spring and row covers to protect from frost at both ends of the growing cycle, especially in short growing seasons.

Planting & Growing: After all chance of frost has passed, plant 4-5 seeds in hills 2"-4" apart. When the young plants are established, thin each hill to two to three plants each.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when the fruits have turned a deep solid color and the rind is hard. Harvest the main part of the crop before heavy frosts hit your area. Cut squash from the vines carefully leaving two inches of stem attached. Unlike many winter squash, Delicata can be used right after harvest. No curing necessary.

STILL Eating Them 8 Months Later in Sonoma, Ca (Zone 9a)!

WOW! That's my review in a word, but I will elaborate:
They ARE quite small, but that's why you're buying "CANDYSTICK" and not "the 'ole Classic", right? They are *perfect* for individual servings or when you just need a little bit to add to a Mixed-Roasted-Veggies array. It was especially perfect for sharing with single friends/family/neighbors (who wouldn't know what else to do with a whole Kabocha or Waltham Butternut), or even couples or families where there were picky-eaters opposed to pumpkins! Though, their intense sweetness made them a pretty big hit with our neighbors' kids...!
THEY REALLY DO VINE, though, so keep an eye on them - - if you feed them generously they will be generous in turn, but careful what you plant them next to!
When the packet said they were "good keepers", I'd thought they meant ~maybe~ 6 months? I cut the last of them in early October (they would have kept growing through mid-November in my area, I just needed to prep the ground for garlic), and we still have three left - - firm and solid as they were almost 9 months ago! They're also quite pretty; my mother used the ones I gave her as part of the centerpiece decoration at our family's thanksgiving (she didn't know they were edible; they were so pretty to her she just assumed they were decorative)!

Great taste, not very prolific

The taste of the squash is so good. Very sweet and buttery tasting. My only disappointment is that the vine did not produce very many squash. Maybe I just need to give it different nutrition to pump it up. But hands down, great flavor.
