Beans - Scarlet Runner - Phaseolus coccineus

Tender Annual Pole. Heirloom. Plant this scarlet flowering vine and stand back. Growing at least 6'-8' in a season, this productive vine produces green snap beans, and the flowers attract hummingbirds if you don't eat them first. Keep picking the delicious bean pods all summer long to promote more flowers. For dried beans, pick mature pods.

Did You Know? The heart-shaped leaves are also known as cordate.

Soil and Water: Legumes like well-drained soil rich in organic matter and a moderate amount of nutrients. Water lightly at planting, medium at flowering, and heavily throughout harvest time. Avoid overhead watering which can promote disease.

Planting and Growing: This vine needs a good trellis for its vigorous summer show. Start indoors in short-season climates, or seed directly once soils have reached at least 65°F, preferably after the last frost.

Harvesting and Storage: Pick continually to keep the crop coming. Harvest pods before the bean seeds inside make the pod fat.

I'll eat it as a snap bean.

It's supposed to be the bean that never fails; that and the historic fava bean that saved starving Sicily. I must see what it can do!

So many seeds in the pack!

The seeds are ginormous and there are lots of them in the pack. Love growing this vine for the bonus of the flowers and the beans...should have started them earlier because they don't always do well in this heat. But, I couldn't resist and now the magic beans are planted...
