Description

Cherry Tomato - Gardener's Delight - Lycopersicon lycopersicum

Tender Annual Indeterminate. Heirloom. This German cherry tomato is so sweet it used to be called Sugar Lump, in fact it is said to be the best tasting cherry tomato. Cute cherry-sized, red fruit borne in clusters of 6-12. This variety is container adaptable. The plants need staking and should be given plenty of room. The fruit is prone to cracking.

Did You Know? Tomatoes are a member of the nightshade family which also includes tomatillos, eggplant, peppers and potatoes.

Soil & Water: Tomatoes love fertile soil rich in organic matter. Add plenty of compost prior to planting. Soil pH is preferred between 5.5-7.0. Soak the soil 4"-6" deep at 7-day intervals.

Planting & Growing: Sow seeds in flats 6-8 weeks before the last frost and thin to 2" apart after the first true leaves appear. Before transplanting after the last frost, harden off the plants by placing them outdoors for a few hours to start, increasing the amount of time each day until they are accustomed to a full day of sunlight.

Harvesting & Storage: Harvest when individual fruits give slightly under finger pressure; the shoulders may not have changed color yet.

Organic Tomato, Gardener's Delight

Tomatoes are not considered a winter crop, but here near the mountains on Kauai we do plant tomatoes year round. This is an exceptional tomato. Everyone who visits is envious of my tomato plant. It is loaded with fruit in December! It is also pest free and seems to not care that we received a good ten inches of rain last month. It is slow to ripen due to the lack of sun and cool weather. Will plant again in the spring for another bumper crop. I was ready to give up on tomatoes until I tried this one! Thank, Peaceful Valley!
