Description

This perfumed Mediterranean herb is at its best when harvested fresh from the garden, with a complex, sweeter pungency than its more assertive cousin, oregano. Marjoram is easy to grow from seed and forms an attractive mound of small-leaved green sprigs. This versatile kitchen companion combines well with garlic, onions, thyme, basil and bay leaves. It is the herb of choice for flavoring cheese and egg dishes, herb breads and stuffings, mushrooms, poultry or beans and adds bright flavor to a wide range of everyday cooking.

While Renee's Garden seeds are not all certified organic, they do not sell treated or GMO seeds and have signed the "Safe Seed Pledge.”

Planting & Care

Planting: To Plant Directly in the Garden: Once weather has warmed up in spring, sow in full sun in a well-worked, finely-textured seedbed with good drainage. Sow seeds 1/2 - 1" apart and lightly cover 1/8" deep with sifted soil. Keep soil evenly moist and well weeded while awaiting germination. Thin plants 6 - 8" apart. To Start Indoors: Sow seeds 1/2 - 1" apart in a container of seed starting mix and cover 1/8" deep. As with most perennial herbs, germination is slow, up to 2 - 3 weeks; be sure to keep the seed moist, but not soggy. Provide a strong light source as soon as seedlings emerge. When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant 6 - 8" apart in well-drained good garden soil in full sun.

Growing: Keep young seedlings well weeded and evenly watered. Plants grow 12 - 18" tall and are perennial in areas where the ground doesn't freeze. In cold winter climates, pot up sweet marjoram plants and bring indoors to a cool, sunny spot to over-winter; or start new plants from seed each year. Leaves can be easily air-dried for later use, but this herb is at its most delicious when freshly harvested.
