Stupice tomatoes, scientifically known as Solanum lycopersicum, are a popular choice among gardeners and tomato enthusiasts. These versatile and early-maturing tomatoes are a favorite for home gardeners and small-scale farmers alike.
Introducing Stupice Tomatoes
Stupice tomatoes are a determinate variety, meaning they grow to a predetermined height and produce fruit over a relatively short period. They are known for their exceptional cold tolerance, making them suitable for regions with shorter growing seasons or cooler climates. These tomatoes originate from the Czech Republic and have gained popularity worldwide for their unique characteristics.
Early Maturation
One of the standout features of Stupice tomatoes is their early maturation. They typically produce ripe fruit in just 55-60 days from transplanting, making them an excellent choice for gardeners eager to enjoy fresh, homegrown tomatoes as soon as possible. This early harvest can be especially advantageous in areas with shorter growing seasons.
Compact Growth Habit
Stupice tomato plants have a compact growth habit, which means they are well-suited for container gardening or small garden spaces. Their bushy nature makes them easy to manage and prune, ensuring that they fit into various garden layouts.
Cold Tolerance
Perhaps one of the most notable characteristics of Stupice tomatoes is their remarkable cold tolerance. These plants can withstand cooler temperatures better than many other tomato varieties. They can endure light frost, allowing you to extend your growing season and enjoy tomatoes even when the weather is less than ideal.
Fruit Characteristics
Stupice tomatoes produce small to medium-sized, round fruit with a vibrant red color when ripe. The flavor of Stupice tomatoes is a delightful combination of sweet and tangy, making them suitable for salads, sandwiches, and a wide range of culinary applications. Their thin skin and juicy flesh make them a favorite for fresh eating.
Growing Stupice Tomatoes
To grow Stupice tomatoes successfully, follow these steps:
Starting Seeds: Begin by starting your Stupice tomato seeds indoors about 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost date in your area. Use high-quality potting soil and provide adequate light and warmth for germination.
Transplanting: Once the seedlings have grown to a suitable size and the risk of frost has passed, transplant them into your garden or chosen containers. Ensure proper spacing, typically 18-24 inches apart, to allow for healthy growth.
Support and Pruning: Stupice tomato plants may benefit from staking or caging to support their compact growth habit. Prune them as needed to maintain shape and remove any unwanted growth.
Watering and Fertilizing: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regularly feed your tomato plants with a balanced fertilizer to ensure they receive essential nutrients.
Harvesting: Harvest Stupice tomatoes when they reach their full, rich red color and gently detach from the stem. Enjoy them fresh or use them in your favorite recipes.
Stupice Tomato Seeds are an excellent choice for gardeners seeking early-maturing, cold-tolerant tomato varieties with a delicious flavor profile. Their compact growth habit makes them suitable for a range of gardening setups, and their versatility in the kitchen ensures you'll enjoy the fruits of your labor in various culinary creations. Whether you have a small garden or want to extend your growing season, Stupice tomatoes are a rewarding choice for any gardener.

This tomato grew in my container garden and was very prolific despite growing in only a 5 gallon pot. It gave me a good harvest of tasty red tomatoes of all sizes. Wonderful variety for tight spaces!
I ordered this variety for a container garden. I love the size and the flavor never disappoints us.
I started Stupice this year after reading a review in Mother Earth News late last year. Living in zone 9B, I'm able to start my seeds early and get them outside soon, so I have been harvesting pingpong ball sized Stupice tomatoes since May 10th. The flavor is delicious the color is absolutely stunning. I don't know if these will can well, though, since they are small and very juicy. It may be a good tomato to dry instead.
I eagerly await these ping pong ball sized gems every summer. Love the fact they are early so usually the first tomatoes ready. Most get eaten before they make it to the house. Delicious!
