Actinidia arguta

Zones: 4-9

Chill Hours: 300

Looks: Light green, fuzzless fruit so no need to peel before enjoying. Inside you will find the familiar emerald green kiwi flesh.

Personality: Smaller than fuzzy kiwi, often sweeter.

Facts of Note: Popular because it is one of the hardiest and because it bears both male and female flowers, allowing for easy fruit production. High in vitamin C. New growth tender to frost, but plant recovers quickly. 1'–2’ vine. This variety was developed in Japan.

Pollination: Self–pollinated.

Originally from China, kiwis ripen in late summer and are rich in vitamin C. Vigorous, ornamental vines must be supported and can be grown over arbors, fences, or walls. Plant 10 feet apart in full sun in regular, well–drained garden soil. Mostly pest–free. Prune aggressively every year in the dormant season similarly to muscadine grapes. The plants are very frost tolerant in full dormancy, but can be damaged if a hard freeze occurs once the vine has started to break dormancy. It is recommended you wrap young vines in a frost blanket if a hard freeze is expected once the vine has started to break dormancy. Sold by individual bare–root vine. Non–taxable. The vines are 1 year old, and will fruit 2–6 years after you plant them. The more fertilizer used, the longer it will take to fruit.
