- Cankers: discolored or sunken bark develops where the bacterium survives between seasons. Bacterial ooze may appear in warm, humid weather.
These signs are suggestive, not conclusive. Drought, freeze injury, root problems and other diseases can also cause dieback. Compare the pattern across the tree and ask a local Extension plant-diagnostic service when the diagnosis is uncertain.

When infection risk is highest
Blossoms are especially vulnerable when susceptible flowers are open, bacterial populations are active, and wetting occurs. An integrated prevention plan
- Start with site and variety selection. Choose cultivars and rootstocks suited to your region and consider documented fire-blight susceptibility. Resistance reduces risk but does not make a tree immune.
- Avoid excess vigor. Apply nitrogen according to tree growth, soil or tissue information and local guidance. Excessively succulent shoots are vulnerable.
- Protect bark and roots. Prevent mower, string-trimmer and cultivation wounds, and avoid chronic irrigation stress.
- Inspect at bloom and during shoot growth. Mark suspicious areas and check again as symptoms develop.
- Remove overwintering sources. During dormancy, prune confirmed cankers and dead infected wood when conditions are dry.

Pruning active infections
Pruning recommendations during the growing season vary with tree age, cultivar susceptibility, weather, infection severity and local disease pressure. Cutting a fixed distance below every visible symptom is not reliable because bacteria can extend beyond external discoloration. Follow current regional Extension guidance or work with a qualified arborist, especially when a scaffold, trunk or young tree is involved.

About sprays and biological controls
Preventive materials work only when the product label lists the crop and target disease and the application is timed correctly. Edward, I could not recommend any types of treatments like you are talking about. I would be very hesitant to put vinegar on a tree, it might do more harm than good.
Heard that a mix of 4 parts vinegar to 6 parts water immediately after pruning away the infected branches and again 2 weeks later is effective on pear trees.
Is this an old wife’s tale or is this treatment good.
Paul, I would pick them up and put them into your garbage. Do not put them into your compost bin. I would always side with more caution when it comes to fire blight.
Will apples from an infected fire blight tree, that fall to the ground transfer the fire blight to the soils?
In reply to Eric (comment posted April 30, 2020): apples do not come true to type when grown from seed. You need to clone the tree by taking a cutting and grafting it to a suitable rootstock. Check out this method of propogation in any decent source on growing fruit trees.
I would think that if you could take the cutting from a part of the tree that isn’t showing any signs of fireblight, then there is a good chance you could grow a replacement. Keep it well away from the infected parent tree. If the cutting does have fireblight then it would probably die quickly.
