Seed Planting Calculator

Use the calculator below to estimate when to start seeds indoors and when to sow or transplant outdoors. Enter your average last spring freeze date and first fall freeze date for the location where you will grow.

Before you calculate

  1. Find local freeze-date normals with the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information or another trusted local climate source.
  2. Use the average last spring freeze and first fall freeze dates for a nearby reporting station.
  3. Enter those dates in the calculator and review the suggested indoor-starting, transplanting, or direct-sowing window for each crop.

Calculator dates are planning estimates. Adjust for your microclimate, elevation, current weather, crop variety, and the instructions on the seed packet.
